Term 5
This term:
In Literacy:
This term we will be doing two blocks of learning based on the books ‘Hungry Hen by Richard Waring’ and ‘Aaarrgghh Spider! By Lydia Monks’ where we will be thinking and talking confidently about responses to a book, asking questions and making connections with their own experiences. We will be exploring the text through collaborative play; role play and storytelling.
In Sounds-Write the children will be continue to consolidate learning to blend, segment and sound manipulate words with the VCC (e.g ant), CVCC (e.g. pond), CCVC (e.g drum), CCVCC (e.g. shrimp) and CCCVC (e.g. strap) format. They will also be consolidating their knowledge of the 2 letter one sound phonemes such as sh, ch, th. The children will really benefit from practising this skill at home by completing the fortnightly homework activity and regular reading. Weekly, the children will be provided with opportunities for free and structured writing.
In Mathematics:
This term we will be learning the composition of the numbers 6-9. We will also be learning all about odd and even numbers, doubling and equal distribution such as sharing.
Look what we've been up to in Owls.
Week 1 -
It was lovely to have the children back this week. In Literacy, we have started looking at our new book, “Aaaarrrgghh! Spider!” by Lydia Monks. We have been learning lots of different facts about spiders and talking about if they would be good as a pet. In Maths, we have been learning how to double numbers to 5, some children even started to challenge themselves with doubles to 10. In ‘Understanding the World’, we have started our new topic on farms by learning what a farm is and what lives on one, all ready for our trip at the end of this term. We have also learnt about France and discussed how other countries speak different languages. Maybe you can see if your child remembers how to say Hello and Goodbye in French!
Week 2 -
Owls class have made us super proud this week. We had Ramsbury Hub in to visit us on Monday to see our phonics work and the children were a credit! We have continued our literacy work around ‘Aaarghh Spider’ by Lydia Monks. The children have been investigating and finding out all about spiders – are they bad guys or good guys? In maths we have been exploring odd and even numbers. With the beautiful hot, sunny weather, we have enjoyed making shady dens and playing with water and sand.
Week 3 -
This week we have started a new book in Literacy, we have started by looking at the end papers and picking out key vocabulary. We then went on a nature hunt and made our own end papers, just like in the book. In Maths, we have been learning about equal distribution and sharing and how if things are equal, they have to be the same. We also enjoyed a fantastic day on Thursday celebrating VE day where we made flags and bunting as well as helped Mrs Pepler write a class reply back to the letter that the children at Paxcroft received from a veteran. Oh and of course we had a yummy street style lunch!
